What is central serous retinopathy?

Central serous retinopathy (abbreviated CSR) is a condition where a pocket of clear fluid collects under the retina, in or near the central part of the retina, the macula. This condition can occur at any age and usually occurs in otherwise healthy eyes. The main symptom is visual distortion or a fixed hazy spot (or blind spot) at or near the center of vision. CSR is painless. The exact cause of CSR is unclear, but certain medicines, most notably steroid-related drugs, if taken for a long time can cause CSR or make it worse. Also, it seems to occur more often in people with “type-A” personalities and people undergoing a great deal of stress. CSR usually occurs in only one eye, but can occur in both.

In most cases, the condition resolves on its own in 2 to 3 months without any treatment. In about one third of people with CSR, it can recur at a later time. Sometimes, if CSR recurs or does not improve on its own, photodynamic therapy or laser treatment may be beneficial. Typically, people with CSR have a good prognosis; however, in rare and severe cases, permanent vision loss can occur.
