Why do I see a distorted or blind spot in my central vision?

The macula is the central part of the retina, and is responsible for central vision. Problems with the macula usually lead to a blurry or distorted area, or a smudge, or a blind spot in or near the center of vision. Unlike the visual disturbance caused by floaters, macular conditions can cause a fixed hazy or blind spot within or near the center of vision. Many macular conditions can cause these symptoms. Some of these conditions include macular pucker, macular hole, macular degeneration, central serous retinopathy, and retinal vascular occlusions. There are many other macular conditions, as well as conditions of other parts of the eye (including the lens or optic nerve) that may cause such symptoms. Even a stroke in the brain can cause similar symptoms.

If you experience a new distorted, hazy or blind spot in or near the center of vision or any part of your field of vision, you should contact your eye doctor immediately.
